Backwashing
Regular cleaning or back-washing of your filter is necessary to remove dirt particles and all other forms of undesirable trapped matter which would eventually clog the filter. Removing these particles assists chemical disinfectants to work more effectively by removing nutrients which assist bacterial growth.
